MSDS 2022’s Infini Team won 2nd place in the Pitch category, while Team Data Saiyans bagged 3rd place in Hackathon of the 1st USHER Hackathon and Pitch Online Competition held last July 15-17, 2021.
More than 15 teams from 13 schools nationwide competed against each other with the goal of providing possible solutions to mitigate the rising risk of contamination among front liners in hospitals, medical facilities and other government units and private organizations.
Hosted by USHER Technologies, Inc., in partnership with the Philippine Association of Colleges and Universities, the Catholic Educational Association of the Philippines, Embiggen Consulting, Philippine Disaster Resilience Foundation, and Philippine Society of Information Technology Education – Central Luzon, the competition showcased innovative efforts that promote outstanding engineering through disaster resilience and disaster risk reduction.
Three groups from the MSDS 2022 cohort joined the competition. The first two groups, Team Tam composed of Geriandre Piquero, Joanne Donnabel Magugat, Jefferson Tan and Karen Patricia Reyes, and Team Data Saiyans consisting of Antonio Rafael Fernando, Patricia Rose Donato, Marc Jerrone Castro, Joaquin Emmanuel Gonzales and Kristine Ann Carandang, competed in the Hackathon category wherein they were tasked to discover, interpret, create, and derive insights from USHER’s structural health monitoring tool. Melissa Carlos of Seda Hotels was assigned as the in-house mentor of both teams.
The third group, Infini Team made up of Manuel Dionisio Mapa, Mia Desiree Verdeprado, Patricia Rose Donato, Fredrick Rara, and Xidy Del Rosario, joined the Pitch competition. They were assigned to design, conceptualize, and create a marketing campaign that highlighted the need for a structural monitoring tool to build resilience in communities. Their in-house mentor during the 3-day competition was Paul Pajo of Embiggen Consulting.
The teams acknowledged their Data Science mentors Prof. Christopher Monterola, Prof. Erika Fille Legara, and Prof. Christian Alis, for continually sharing their knowledge and wisdom, and inspiring their students to pay it forward through practical applications of data science.
